Black History is History

Black History is history, is US History, is happening all around us every day and every month. But until that’s made more obvious in our schools and in our media, we have February to remind us of the disparity - and ironically, provide a moment to shine a light on Black History in the making.

In Mamahood fashion, we’re keeping things local and highlighting four women from our own community who are making Black History on the daily.

Shauna Mullins, “mother, photographer, wisecracker”, and her daughter, Georgia, began a project in 2017 that was sparked on a whim by a moment of 7 yr-old curiosity and pride, and has evolved into a lasting source of joy, inspiration and education for people around the world.

And in very cool news, they were just featured in Rebel Girls Powerful Pairs: 25 Tales of Mothers and Daughters, which released Feb 8th!

Itzel Hayward, speaker, healer, author, anti-racism educator, and fierce and compassionate advocate for love.

During the pandemic, Hayward and her associate Kathy Simon, created a program to help people discuss and address racism in everyday conversation - with family, friends, strangers on the internet. Combining non-violent communication techniques with anti-racism work, they’ve created a powerful and accessible resource for people across the country.

This course is taught with love and compassion, and created with the intention to meet everyone where they’re at on their anti-racism journey. By modeling what effective and wholehearted communication looks like through their conversational role-playing, Hayward and Simon give students hope for what’s possible and then, through live student interaction, a chance for real-life practice in a safe container.

We’re proud to say that this course is now offered to all Mamahood moderators as part of our education and training.

Myisha T. Hill is a mental health activist, speaker, and entrepreneur passionate about the mental wellness and empowerment of women. In 2018, after having to end a toxic relationship with a friend and coworker, she became curious about white women and their relationship with privilege. It was then that she began a journey of identifying her own internalized oppression and racism. And during Minority Mental Health Awareness Month of that same year, she launched her Check Your Privilege interview series to find ways that white women, in particular, were working to shift from passive ally-ship to becoming action-driven co-conspirators to BIWOC (Black, Indigenous Women of Color). Myisha now works with organizations and community groups to take white people on a self-reflective journey exploring their relationship with power, privilege, and racism.
